Goal setting is important in every grade, especially in elementary classrooms as students lay down the foundation of their learning.
Below are some fun and easy ways for students to set goals to achieve their learning targets.
- Set Simple Goals at the Beginning of the Year– The beginning of the year is the perfect time for students to reflect on their strengths and what they can do to improve. One of my favorite picture books to help students get into this mindset is The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by Rafael Lopez. This book reminds students that no matter where they are in their learning journey, the most important thing is to begin to learn and grow. After reading and discussing it’s central idea, encourage students to choose one or more goals that they may have for themselves this year. Students can either draw it out, for the younger grades or write it out.

2. Reflect, Set, Grow!!!– Once students have had time to learn, encourage them to reflect, set, and grow some more! These engaging and no-prep activities allow students to do just that. Plus, they are perfect to share with parents during parent-teacher conferences.
3. Ring in the New Year with New Goals and a Vision Board– As students return from their Holiday Break, celebrate the New Year with new goals and a fun and simple vision board that encourages students to think BIG! This easy brochure is fun to complete and helps students reflect on their previous goals and set ones for the end of the school year. For the updated New Year Goal Setting Brochure, click here.
