Teaching syllables is one of my favorite things to teach! Here are some fun, interactive, and easy ways to teach identifying and counting syllables in the primary classroom!
- DEFINE IT– Define what a syllable is and then invite students to brainstorm different words to go along with each number of syllables. i.e. Who can share a word that has only one syllable? Who can share a word that has two syllables?
2. CLAP IT OUT!– Practice identifying how many syllables are in each word by clapping them out. Simply say various words aloud and students will clap out the syllables together. Below is a fun counting syllable game to complete as a class, in small groups, or at a center. Students roll a die then clap the syllables of a word in that column.
3. SORT IT OUT! Share different words with your students then have them sort them out. In the activity below, students sort out the picture cards with different syllables in the correct column. It’s fun, interactive, and allows students individual practice.
