I’m no fan of creepy crawlers and animals of the night, but I have to admit, they sure are fun to learn about with my firsties!  Throw in some nonfictional and fictional literature with writing and arts and craft, even the squirmiest students will definitely be caught in the learning web!

Here are some fun and engaging bat and spider activities!

  1. Create an All About Bats Anchor Chart– Clear up misconceptions about bats by encouraging students to share what they know about bats and identify them as fact or fiction.

2. Create a Bat Craft– Encourage students to pick a fact and fiction statement to record on their own writing template.  Once completed, students then cut and glue their writing onto a bat tracer ready for display!  Click on the image below for a free copy of the writing template!

3. Read about Bats– To learn more about bats, here is a list of my favorite bat books and NO-PREP activities!

4. Write about Bats– If you need additional teaching materials and activities for your students, check out this extensive All About Bats Packet filled with activities, informational posters, and more!

As for spiders, we go through the same routine with pairing nonfiction and fiction texts and the t-chart.  However, I added a KWL chart and made it even more engaging by incorporating graphic organizers to help my students think through their writing.

No matter if you’re teaching about spiders or bats this season, I hope you will have an AHHHH-some time with your littles!
