Teaching about bats is one of my favorite topics in the fall since we can do so much research and discuss facts and fiction! Plus, who doesn’t love these gentle, misunderstood creatures?!
To start our learning about bats, we read some nonfiction and fiction books on them. There are so many amazing books on bats that I have come to love, so it’s hard to narrow them down. However, I have made a list of my favorites below.

1.NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC KIDS: BATS by Elizabeth Carney- Bats- Want to learn all about bats? This easy-to-read book for little readers is perfect! Filled with vivid photographs and written by an expert, this book is a must-have to discover the spooky and fascinating lives of bats!
2. AMAZING BATS: AMAZING FACTS ABOUT BATS by Anita Williams- There are a lot of misconceptions about bats. Read this fun and interesting book on bats to help clear up all the misunderstandings and find out why these flying mammals are in fact, amazing and extraordinary!
3. BATS by Gail Gibbons- Jump into the fascinating lives of these furry, flying mammals with Gail Gibbons! Add this classic to your collection and be ready to learn from the beautiful and detailed illustrations and interesting factoids on bats!
4. STELLALUNA by Janell Cannon- Stellaluna is a pup, who falls from her mom’s embrace when an owl attacks them. Join Stellaluna as she searches for her mom and finds her way back inside her mom’s loving wings.
5. FIONA THE FRUIT BAT by Dan Riskin @ illustrated by Rachel Qiuqi- Written by a bat expert and biologist, Riskin takes the readers into the extraordinary life of Fiona, the Fruit Bat as she learns to use echolocation to fly and hunt in the dark. The book is fun and informative and the illustrations are cheerful and charming!
6. BATS AT THE LIBARY by Brian Lies- If bats were at the library, what would they do? Read to find out how these nocturnal mammals turn the library upside down for their fun escapades filled with book fun and joy!
7. BATS AT THE BEACH by Brain Lies- Now that bats have had their fun in the library, what do you think they will do at the beach? Spread on your moon-tan lotion and bring out your marshmallows for some nighttime and imaginative fun with these fascinating flying wonders!
8. BITSY BAT SCHOOL STAR by Kaz Windness- Bitsy is new to school and doesn’t seem to fit in with all the other animals. Somehow everything she does is wrong and she can’t just make it right. After having a huge meltdown, she decides that school may not be for her. Will her family be able to help her find the courage to come back to school and learn how to shine in her own way?
After reading, we make a list of facts and myths about bats on an anchor chart.
From this list, the students then chose one fact and one fictional statement about bats and wrote them onto their Fact & Fiction boxes. After completion, students cut and glued their boxes onto their bats.
