When Earth Day comes around, it’s the perfect time to pull out all the Earth Day picture books that celebrate Earth and all the wonderful things about our planet!

Below are my favorite Earth Day Picture Books!

1. HAPPY EARTH DAY! by Deborah Hopkinson and Illustrated by Jennifer Zivoi- Learn about Earth Day’s history and fun facts with this adorable Little Golden Book! It’s informative and easy to read with delightful illustrations for young readers! The book also includes fun projects that families can complete together including creating a bug hotel, composting, growing carrots, and more!

2. ONE EARTH by Eileen Spinelli and Illustrated by Rogério Coelho- Help kids become more conservation-minded with this beautifully illustrated book! Written to help children feel connected to our planet, it counts down to encourage children to reduce, reuse, and recycle to keep our home healthy, clean, and liveable for all living things big and small.

3. EARTH! MY FIRST 4.54 BILLION YEARS by Stacy McAnulty and Illustrated by David Litchfield- Earth is ready to take on the spotlight and share everything there is to know herself! Told from a first-person perspective, Earth finally gets to tell her story from the beginning to today. Filled with facts, this is a fun read and so educational!

4. MY FRIEND EARTH by Patricia MacLachlan and Illustrated by David Diaz and Francesca Sanna- Written as a poetic text, this book shares the beauty, grace, and wonder of Earth. With flaps, vibrant colors, and interesting textures, this book will help young readers fall in love with our wonderous planet.

5. ISLAND GIRLS: FREE THE SEA OF PLASTIC by Blair Northen Williamson and Illustrated by Svitlana Holovchenko- Based on true life events, sisters Sadie and Josie are saddened and upset when they find that their turtle friends have been mistaken for plastic bags as jellyfish. When the turtles become sick, the girls use their voices to bring awareness to plastics polluting the oceans to bring change and make a difference.

6. HELLO, TREE by Ana Crespo and Illustrated by Dow Phumiruk- Inspired by the 2013 Black Forest fire in Colorado, the book is written from the perspective of a tree that witnessed the destruction around it and how humans, people, and nature teamed up afterward to bring forth new life to the forest. This is a great book to teach young readers the importance of preservation and the connectivity of all living things on Earth.

7. WE ARE WATER PROTECTORS by Carole Lindstrom and Illustrated by Michaela Goade- This award-winning book honors the movements led by indigenous people to protect the land, animals, plants, and sacredness of the Earth from pollution and corruption. This book is powerfully written, beautifully illustrated, and important to add to all classrooms!
